Chapter Six
Dalton
The house is quiet when I return from the coffee run. Manuel and Tom figured out that I want the day alone with Amy, and they both left while I was out. I walk through the garage door and place the two cups of coffee on the counter, along with the flowers, and begin removing my “older man” disguise. A few years ago, I got tired of always needing security guards whenever I wanted to leave the house to do basic errands. Manuel and I worked together and came up with a few disguises that I use to hide my identity. Unless someone knows me well, they’d have a hard time recognizing me. There are still plenty of times when security guards are necessary, but I’m able to live a more normal life this way. Ever since I decided to make my relationship with Amy permanent, I’ve been thinking about how I’m going to give Amy and our future children a more normal life.
I hear movement behind me and turn to find Amy and Leading Lady standing in the doorway. “I was going to bring your coffee up to you.” I pick up her cup and walk over to her. Before I let her take it, I lean over and cover her lips with mine. After we’re both breathless, I place my forehead against hers and smile. “This is probably the better idea. I wouldn’t have let you out of the bedroom.”
Amy smiles as she wraps an arm around me. The other hand reaches for the coffee. “Thank you so much. I’m a bear before my caffeine.” After she’s had a few sips, I lead her over to the breakfast bar, and she sits while I grab the huge cinnamon rolls I picked up and place them on plates. “Oh my God, you’re spoiling me.” She groans when I place one of the plates in front of her.
Before sitting next to her, I place the arrangement of flowers in front of her on the counter then sit down. As I’m looking into her eyes, I let her know, “I want to make up for all the time I acted like the king asshole. I’m so sorry I fought what was happening between us instead of manning up and acknowledging my feelings.”
Amy’s eyes light up as she smiles shyly, then she reaches over to hold my cheek with her soft palm as she touches her lips to mine. “You’re doing a good job of making up for it. Just don’t break my heart.”
The thought of hurting Amy sends pain slicing through my heart. I promise her, “Never. I’ll protect your heart forever. Now, enough of the heavy talk. Let’s go enjoy our day together.”
